Michelle McKinnon
Hi, I’m Michelle an Australian artist based in South Gippsland, Victoria, where I paint from a small home studio surrounded by the landscape that inspires much of my work.
My paintings often begin with simple observation. A branch of gum blossom on the kitchen table, a handful of flowers gathered on a walk, or the quiet presence of everyday objects in soft afternoon light. I’m drawn to the understated beauty of these moments and the sense of calm they can bring to a space.
Many of my still life paintings feature Australian native flora – gum blossom, grevillea, banksia and other seasonal branches. I love their sculptural forms and subtle colours, and the way they reflect the character of the Australian landscape.
Animals have also been a constant part of my life. Growing up, my sisters and I were surrounded by a lively assortment of creatures – terrapins, ducks, guinea pigs, quails, rabbits, cats, horses, dogs and many other furry or feathered companions. That early menagerie shaped a lifelong affection for animals and the personalities they bring into our homes.
Alongside my still life paintings, I now paint pet portraits by commission. These portraits are created from photographs and aim to capture not just a likeness, but the character and spirit that make each animal unique.
Whether I’m painting flowers or a beloved companion, what interests me most is connection. The small details that make something feel familiar and meaningful – the curve of a stem, the tilt of a head, the quiet presence of something loved.
My hope is always the same: to create paintings that feel warm, thoughtful and personal – artworks that bring a sense of quiet joy to the spaces where people live.
